Per title, price check on a Sony PlayStation Debugging Station DTL-H1102 PAL

Pics attached.

Comes with the leads and pad as pictured, as well as a PS carry bag thing. Tested with PAL and JP retail games, I have nothing more exotic to hand to play. JP games play in black and white.

Value? (Please specify currency...I'm in the UK so will assume GBP if you don't haha!)

Thanks

They seem to be going anywhere in the region of £250-£400 although yours had had the power board swapped with a non-standard normal 220V version and the parallel port cover is missing so that may affect price for collectors. Generally speaking, it looks to be in decent condition.

Cool, thanks for the info, appreciate it.

had the power board swapped with a non-standard normal 220V version

Thanks, I had no idea.

Excuse my ignorance, but how can you tell?

Not doubting you whatsoever, I'm just curious / clueless, all info is good info, especially as this will be in the sales forum here soon haha! (Likely a very dumb question, refer to the 'I'm clueless' part haha.)

Edit

Sorry, another question, questions actually, dumb questions most likely. For anyone, I don't want to waste just one person's time haha!

Is the replacement power board the reason for JP games displaying in B&W?

If not, is there a reason why JP games are in B&W? Is that just how it is with these PAL units?

Are there any performance / functionality changes (if not already covered) that this swapped power board brings with it?

Thanks!

Just one question... are the televisions you have on hand actually multi region? That is; they can display PAL and both North American and Japanese NTSC?

I've never had one of these units, but I do have SCPH-1000 (Japanese retail launch model). I remember many years ago it would display B&W output on old tv's that weren't multi region capable.

Fair question. That same TV from post 1 has always displayed in colour with any JP or US retail system I've plugged in. I've just tested a Core Grafx (proper, not mini) in the exact same TV input in case I was going mad.

I've done a bit of googling and seen other units like this with B&W for JP games.

I remember reading up on it on Assembler many years ago, and I remember it was something very simple like needing a different av lead, and I even remember thinking I'll remember that, and annoyingly I can't. I think there's a searchable version of the forums somewhere, I'll take a look some time.

The 110x series of PS1 debug station had a small 12v power supply brick. The back of the PS1 case above the port also has DC 12V written on it.

As for the black and white picture that’s perfectly normal. You are using an RF cable to display an analogue NTSC picture on a PAL television. If the TV you are using also has an RGB SCART socket, the image will display in full colour if you use that port with a PS1 RGB scart cable. It’s worth noting that an RF cable provides the worst picture quality even if you’re playing a PAL game on a PAL TV. Using an RGB SCART will get you the best quality image.

Before HD and 1080p were TV image formats, Europe used an analogue signal called PAL and the USA and Japan used a system called NTSC. Generally speaking PAL was a slightly higher resolution image with more lines but refresh rate was 17% slower at 50Hz instead of NTSC’s 60Hz. Your TV can’t display the NTSC image properly which is why you are seeing a black and white image.

Which cable type are you using with your core Grafx?

If your TV has no scart input, you can use a NTSC-PAL converter box. It will allow the image to be displayed in colour, but the image quality will be the same quality as a normal image seen via an RF cable.

Having the UK power board installed provides no additional functionality. I imagine in the past, a previous owner lost the original 12v small power adaptor and therefore fitted a standard power board to allow the console to still be used.

Super helpful, many thanks indeed.

With the CG, I am just using a regular red white yellow cable (both ends).

(Every other JP or US console I have thrown at the TV from the pictures in last decade has displayed in colour (TV is a Panasonic Viera TX-L37V20B).)

That's the reason why I asked you about the tv you're using. Over here it has been decades since I had to deal with a tv that couldn't display both main NTSC variants (NA and Japan).
I have an old Sony Trinitron 80cm crt (not a HD tube but it does have component input) here that can display both of those plus PAL 50 & 60Hz and also SECAM.
My main LED LCD does have legacy inputs, I also have 2x 1080p Panny plasmas with legacy inputs.

But I do know from past experience talking to people overseas, like the UK for example, that some PAL region folks have to deal with modern televisions that can't handle different NTSC video coming from old consoles. People in the US can sometimes have problems dealing with anything not NTSC, plus the dreaded "my tv only has HDMI inputs".

As I said I've never had a unit like you have here, only launch Japanese retail PS1. It just seems odd (to me) that there would be a difference.

I'm PAL region btw.

I'll maybe look to get a PS1 RGB scart cable at some point.

To my not-techy-whatsoever brain it seems the TV can handle pure JP / US systems fine (ie JP / US machines outputting NTSC), but needs some help (ie correct lead) where the system region and output differ (ie PAL system outputting NTSC).

Or not. Did I mention I'm not techy whatsoever.

Thanks all, appreciate the info and help a huge amount. Especially over something so common. Off to play some Marty, in colour on that TV haha!
