Ok so looking for some help here, picked this up recently and not quite sure if it’s a retail Saturn, an internal test unit or maybe something else.

There are no retail stickers, an odd sticker to the back of the unit and a Sega EPROM BIOS which is labelled 1.00 D with a date of 9.22.94 which is pre the Japanese retail release.

The boot up screen is the same as retail!

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

That's the retail bios, the crc on the sticker matches the dump. Some early consoles came with EPROM bios chips, that's completely normal for all Sega consoles. The date is earlier than the console release date because they had to finish the code before they could release the console, obviously.
If the board serial is 171-6874D, then the console internals should be a complete match for the launch units, except for the serial sticker.
The sticker reads セガ国内渉外部所有, roughly "Sega Internal Public Relations property". So a PR unit, I'm guessing the one they put on display for trade shows like TGS 1994.
